EGGA statistics for 2022
We got the EGGA statistics for 2022 some weeks ago. The total tonnes of steel galvanized by the European industry during 2022 was 8 million tonnes, which means a decrease of -4.4 % in comparison to 2021. The figures excludes production in Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and some other European countries where it is known that several galvanizing plants are in operation. Germany was, as usual, the largest player in Europe, with 24 % of the European market. Other dominating countries are Italy with 13 %, Turkey with 11 % and Poland with 9 %.

Studytrip to Normandy
The 24-26 of October Nordic Galvanizers arranged a study trip to Normandy in France, where we visited two plants, Prestia Galvalek in Carpiquet and Le Caillebotis Diamond in Glos.

Prestia Galvalek
For more than 40 years, Prestia has offered advanced corrosion protection services to the market. With modern and efficient units and the largest galvanizing bath in France (16.5×2.1×3 m) through its SBG factory, Prestia is well known even internationally.

EGGA Assembly in Salzburg
Assembly 2023 was held in Salzburg, Austria at the Imlauer Pitter Hotel, 19-21 June. It had a special focus on the industry’s path to ‘net zero’ and galvanizing’s role in renewable energy generation. The main part of the presentations at the conference was connected to “Green Deal”, energy and product sustainability.

Martin Kopf, President of the German Galvanizing Association, Vice President of EGGA and CEO of Zinkpower, had a presentation with the title “RACE TO ZERO – Sustainability offers opportunities and challenges for the galvanizing industry”. Since the biggest customer segment for galvanizers, the construction industry, is more resource-intensive than any other when it comes to use of raw material, energy and water and also produce a lot of waste, it is very important for all suppliers to this sector to work to decreasing the burden.

Nordic Galvanizer’s annual meeting and conference in Helsinki
On 24-25th May Nordic Galvanizers held its annual me-eting and conference at hotel Marski by Scandic in central Helsinki. Despite the fact that there has been a consoli-dation in our industry so that there are now fewer owners and also fewer plants than before, the conference was well attended and had gathered a total of 62 participants.

New rules for hot-dip galvanizing plants
The first presentation, which was also the longest, was given by Murray Cook from EGGA, the European General Galvanizers Association, and had the title “Implementing the EU BAT Conclusions in Environmental Permitting of Galvanizing Plants”. The BAT conclusions include technologies and associated emission limits that must be implemented – for new plants they are already in force and for existing plants the permits must be reviewed within four years. This means that by November 2026 at the latest, all plants must work in line with these requirements.

Information about NG Guarantee System
As we have described in previous Newsletters a project group within NG has worked on a Guarentee system for steel galvanized in Nordic countries. The reason for a gu-arantee is that the galvanizing industry in Europe expe-rience higher and higher competition from the precoated product Magnelis, which offer a guarantee to its custo-mers. In this Newsletter we will describe the guarantee system and its terms. We also intend to present the sys-tem in webinars for our members. The guarante system is described in a document called ”GENERAL GUARAN-TEE TERMS FOR HOT-DIP GALVANIZING – Nordic Gal-vanizers”, and the most important content is described below.

Newsletter March 2023

The BREF and the BAT Conclusions
As we mentioned earlier the BAT conclusions will be fully implemented and mandatory to follow for all plants cove-red by the IED directive from 4th of November 2026. The IED directive applies to industrial processes classified as environmentally hazardous operations, and the purpose of it is to reduce the impact of industry on human health and the environment.
Who are concerned?
The BAT conclusions concern the following activities spe-cified in Annex I to Directive 2010/75/EU:
2.3. (c)
”Application of protective fused metal coats with an input exceeding 2 tonnes of crude steel per hour; this includes hot dip coating and batch galvanizing.”
2.6.
Surface treatment of ferrous metals using electrolytic or chemical processes where the volume of the treatment vats exceeds 30 m3, when it is carried out in cold rolling, wire drawing or batch galvanizing.

The BREF and the BAT Conclusions
The main BREF for Ferrous Metal Processing (including batch galvanizing) was published on the EIPPCB web site on 14/12/22. The 852 page reference document accompanies the legally significant ‘BAT Conclusions’ that were published during November.
The BAT Conclusions are now translated to all EU languages. NG has sent out the 65 page document in Danish, English, Finnish and Swedish language to all members. NG will get support from EGGA who will make a Q&A and other guidelines for the introduction of the BAT. The BAT conclusions will be fully implemented and mandatory to follow for all plants from 4th of November 2026. For new plants it will be mandatory from 4th November 2022. It is a good idea for everyone with existing plants to already start to study the document and consider what it will mean for the company and what possible changes that might be necessary.

Study trip to Poland
Due to the Covid pandemic it has been four years since last time, but now it was possible again. The 14th to 16th of November Nordic Galvanizers arranged a study trip to Poland to visit two plants, both unique in their own way, Saferoad INTER METAL in Inowroclaw and Zinkpower in Wielkopolska.
The trip started with an informal but nice dinner for the 27 participants, representing all countries in Nordic Galvanizers – also Iceland, at the hotel NH Poznan on the evening of Monday 14th. Next morning it was time for our first visit, to Saferoad INTER METAL.

The high energy price
The high gas price situation results in record high energy bills for consumers, both households and companies. The situation is expected to remain challenging for the rest of 2022 and well into the winter of 2023-24, as fixed price contracts signed before the crisis are expiring and new higher prices are offered by suppliers. There is widespread concern about the impact of high energy prices on the cost of living for households, inflation, and on the competitiveness of European industry. Economic context requires a rapid and coordinated EU-wide response to address high gas prices and prevent lasting social and economic damage.

INTERGALVA 2022 ROME
This last Newsletter before summer hollidays is a summary of the conference Intergalva. There is much more to tell, but this captures at least some of the content. The expectations on the event were high since the last Intergalva 2018 in Berlin was a big success, and also this conference was really great. It was so nice to meet all friends and colleagues that it haven´t been possible to see in more than two years due to Covid-19. The presentations were really interesting and touched on highly topical areas such as the lack of raw materials, high energy prices and the requirements for our industry to approach zero levels in terms of carbon dioxide emissions.

High prices and risk of shortage head topics at EGGA committee meetings
EGGA arrange committee meetings in April and November each year. The meetings are usually held over two days and includes committees for “Environmental & Safety”, “Technical & Research” and “Marketing”, and also an EGGA board meeting. During the meetings both Murray Cook from EGGA and representatives from the national associations inform about ongoing activities and other important things that influence on the galvanizing market. This time the spring meeting was held in Rome, and one of the head topics was the energy and raw material situation created by the Russian occupation of Ukraine.

Starting of 2022…
Many countries have now released its Corona Restrictions. Everything looked very promising for the future, until Russia occupied Ukraine…
IZA, International Zinc Association, has been asked for information to help the European Commission regarding supply chain disruptions as a consequence of Russia-Ukraine war and sanctions. For zinc, IZA have responded that ”Unless there are specific sanctions, we believe the direct effect will be small since the Russian zinc industry is rather vertically integrated, but we have commented on the potential indirect impacts of both electric prices for refining and markets for sulphuric acid which may utilise phosphate rock from Russia going into the fertilizer sector”. So according to IZA the supply of zinc should not be affected by the war, which is otherwise terrible and must end quickly. But as you probably already have recognized the zinc price that NG publishes on our web week 9 was highest ever, 44.07 SEK / kg! Both the LME price for zinc and the dollar was higher than expected.

Fact sheet on ZM-steel

Some new types of continuously coated sheet steels, with varying alloying contents of aluminium and magnesium, are claimed to have advantages over batch galvanizing. The commercial promotion of these steels has featured many misleading statements on the comparisons between the two technical options.

Many of the positive arguments for ZM steel are based on results from accelerated salt spray tests, which is not relevant in real environment. To give another picture EGGA has produced a fact sheet called “Batch hot dip galvanizing and continuously coated ZM grade steels – a true comparison”. Below is some of the information from the fact sheet, which will be available in full version in early 2023.

Galvanized rebar
There are many many tonnes of rebar that are used for building and construction every year. Even if only a few percent of them were galvanized, it would still be many tons. Because of that galvanized rebar is a prioritized project for EGGA. Activities in the rebar area has been ongoing for a very long time (more than 20 years – actually it was one of my first topics to work with when I started at NG in 2002…)

Impact of the Covid -19 on EU industries
Through EGGA we have got a summary of a new European Parliament study on the impact of the Covid -19 pandemic on the EU industries, see below.
The euro area has been hit harder compared to the rest of the worlds economy in 2020, and the recovery in 2021 is expected to be slower. In March and April 2020 it was a large dip and the construction sector operated at 25 % to 30 % below its normal capacity. Italy, Spain, Slovakia, Ireland or France have had a really bad situation.

Newsletter March 2021

Integrated fire protection with galvanized steel
As we have informed about in earlier newsletters R 30, corrosion resistance during 30 minutes, can be reached with galvanized steel, without any further fire protection system. The results of practical tests with fire showed that the hot-dip galvanized steel had several advantages in comparison with the uncoated, black steel:
-Lower emission factor
-Slower heating
-Longer time until the critical temperature is reached
One important thing for the influence of the emission factor is the colour of the coating. To get a low emission factor (0,35 instead of 0,70) the coating should be bright or light grey, so it is important to use steel with the right silicon level.

Revision of EN ISO 1461
As mentioned in earlier news letters the important standard EN ISO 1461 is under revision for the moment. For this work, as for most other activities this year, all physical meetings have been changed to web meetings. EGGA is very active in this work. A new draft of the standard was sent out last summer and has been followed by two meetings, one internal EGGA meeting and one meeting in the standardization group – which to large part consists of EGGA-people – but also have for example Japanese delegates.

BREF Update
The 2:nd EIBBCB Data Workshop was held in Sevilla in the beginning of December. Murray Cook from EGGA was there and has reported on the outcomes of the workshop and the actions arising. The most important topic for us is a suggestion from Germany of a new BAT technique – enclosure of the pre treatment in the plant and installation of a wet scrubber – to take care of emission from the pickling bath. This is already a requirement in some countries, for example in Austria, and many of the big German galvanizers use that in all their plants world wide. If that is accepted it means that all our plants in Nordic countries need to invest in such a solution, which will be both complicated in old buildings and also very expensive.

Newsletter November 2019

Fire resistance of galvanized steel
The high cost of passive fire protection, usually with the help of different painting systems, is an economic disadvantage of steel and composite structures compared to simple concrete constructions. If the corrosion protection system also protect from fire it would be of great benefit.
To find out which possibilities galvanizing could contribute with, EGGA has take part in an international research project in this area.
Steel components are non-flammable and do not contribute to fire loads, but the mechanical properties of the steel are temperature dependent.

Nordic Galvanizers has participated in the Vinnova project ‘Sustainable Indoor Environment for Leisure in the City – Swimming Pools’ which has been ongoing during the period November 2015 to June 2018. Great needs exist for swimming pools in terms of longer life, less energy consumption and a better environment. The purpose of the project is to provide recommendations for construction and renovation of swimming pools and to serve as support for clients and contractors. At swimming pools both hot-dip galvanized steel structures and duplex systems are common.

Low reactivity steel
The work to try to understand more about why some aluminium killed steel show very low reactivity during some circumstances continue. Nordic Galvanizers works together with Boliden, EGGA and the research institute SWEREA in this question.
We will now update our literature, “Galvanizing Handbook” and “Practical advices on hot dip galvanizing” with information about the reactivity issue, to explain to the customers why it sometimes can be difficult to fulfil the thickness requirements in standard EN ISO 1461.

Danish “The Silo” won the Global Galvanizing Awards at Intergalva in Berlin”In the new district Nordhamnen in Copenhagen, Denmark’s most expensive apartment is built in an old silo. The 380 square meter apartment with four balconies is now announced for DKK 30 million” This was to be read in a Swedish newspaper recently. For the Copenhageners, the worn concrete silo with the graffiti text ”Hva drikker mølr” was a well-known profile, but hardly any beautiful building. Therefore, the change is even more impressive! The 42 apartments in the renovation project “The Silo” in Nordhamnen are ready for occupation in December and are now out for sale. The old building has undergone a wonderful transformation, and we at Nordic Galvanizers are of course proud that Architect Cobe, who designed the conversion, chose hot-dip galvanized steel to the facade of this prestigious building!

Nordic Galvanizers Annual Meeting and Conference was performed in Silkeborg, located on Jylland in Denmark. It was a lot of participants, so many as 59 people from all Nordic countries took part in the two-day event. The conference started with a presentation by Dennis Nielsen, plant manager at DOT in Ferritslev.

Steel with too low reactivity to fulfil the coating thickness requirements in EN ISO 1461 is a problem that has been more and more common recently, especially on steel produced with very smooth surface to facilitate laser cutting. After discussions with steel producing companies we have understood that almost all steel producers nowadays work to get as smooth surface as possible, and low surface roughness on all steels will be the future.

Why does salt spray testing give misleading results?
New materials and ”miracle” paints enter into our market now and then. Common for them is that they are stated to be ”better than general galvanizing” or even ”10 times better than general galvanizing”… How, then, have they come to these amazing conclusions? By using accelerated salt spray testing …. We have informed about it before, but it can not be stated too often; salt spray test is not relevant for material comparisons!

To understand why the ‘salt spray test’ fails to reliably predict real corrosion performance, it is important to look at the test procedure. Samples under test are inserted into a temperature-controlled chamber where a salt-containing solution is sprayed, at 35°C, as a very fine fog mist over the samples. As the spray is continuous, the samples are constantly wet, and therefore, constantly subject to corrosion.

Revision of the BREF (Best Available Technique Reference Document) i.e the document with requirements that all galvanizing industries have to follow in the future, is an important issue for the moment. The document is based on data collection from a number of plants in each country in Europe. The deadline for submission of questionnaires to the responsible authority is16 February 2018 – but we expect Member States to set earlier deadlines as they have to check questionnaires and agree confidentiality claims before submitting to EIPPCB (The European IPPC Bureau).

Nordic Galvanizers has produced a new information brochure about zinc in the society and the environment together with the communication company Kreab. The idea to create the brochure from the beginning came because some material that could be used in contact with authorities, especially in Stockholm, was needed. Historically it has been restrictions around the usage of both copper and zinc in Stockholm, and there are still discussions about it now and then. Also in Copenhagen it has been discussions to ban copper and zinc because of the risk to increase the content of those metals in the groundwater, which also is used for production of drinking water. In the brochure some important information about zinc and galvanized steel is given in a pedagogic way.

But now we have got a new galvanizer as member, Gunnebo Industries, located in Gunnebo in Sweden. Gunnebo Industries produce chains, mainly for marine environment. ”In each step of the manufacturing of the chain, our systematic quality monitoring will ensure the highest safety and the longest life span in the product. Our chain is made from special quenched and tempered alloy steel, a guarantee for very high strength, low weight, high wear resistance and long life.”

EGGA Assembly was this year located in Seville in Spain and offered a mixed content of interesting presentations. A separate abstract from the conference will be sent out to NG:s members later. In this Newsletter only some special and interesting products will be mentioned. Already 10 years ago when NG performed an evaluation of various products for white rust protection of galvanized steel, we came in contact with the Spanish company Pro Coat and their transparent layers of paint. Their product is now well established on the continuous galvanizing market, and there are also several projects with batch galvanized steel where it has been used with good results.

Nordic Galvanizer’s board started 2016 with a full day board meeting, which except the normal reporting from the information office also included a work shop where the board members were divided in groups to discuss different issues, to strengthen the association and make it more effective.
One thing that was discussed was how to get the members more committed to Nordic Galvanizers and to attending the meetings. A suggestion was to form committees to work with specific subjects. For example a technical committee, a market committee, a funding committee etc. A committee could exist for a period of time, for example one year, and a board member could serve as a chairman for the group.

The 10 November EGGA arranged a visit to the EU parliament in Brussels. The aim of the visit was to give representatives from the galvanizing industry the possibility to meet with members of the parliament, (MEP) to establish contact and discuss our industry. Unfortunately none of the Nordic MEP:s had the possibility to come, but we met MEP:s from other countries. EGGA has created a group with ”galvanizing friendly MEP:s”, people that have been contacted by EGGA members and shown interest for the galvanizing industry. Many of them were engineers, blacksmiths or other related proffesions or came from countries where the industry needs to grow. From Nordic countries Henrik Steen Jörgensen, Bill Carlsson, Lars-Göran Tylebrink and Annikki Hirn participated. Bills daughter Erika Carlsson, who had another meeting at the parliament at the efternoon, also joined us for this activity. It is important with continued contact also with the nordic MEP:s. We wrote to them before this meeting and got the answer that they already were booked on other things, but at least we have created a first contact and informed.

Swerea KIMAB is a research institute that we have had a lot of cooperation with. They will now perform a large project for the Swedish Transport Administration where different materials will be compared. It is well known that the environment in road tunnels can be highly corrosive, mainly due to chloride containing pollutants, as well as to dripping of aggressive water from the walls. The goals for the project is to develop economically motivated recommendations and classifications for materials in corrosive tunnel environments. Examples of products that are used in tunnels are: cable trays, ventilation systems, suspension systems, stairs, doors etc. The project results will be the basis for future updating of the Transport Administration’s technical regulations in tunnels. NG participate with 147 steel plates, galvanized by Södertälje Varmförzinkning.

Nordic Galvanizers höstmöte i Skagen

Totalt varmförzinkas 7 miljoner ton stål i Europa.

Full fart
